Graham South was born in Harrogate and began his musical life as a cornet play with the Tewit Youth Band.
In 2002 he moved across the Pennines to study music at The University of Manchester where he was fortunate to study trumpet with Tracey Redfern.
During his time as a student he formed the Manchester University Big Band, which he directed until 2009, and also helped establish the
Coupland Brass Quintet. He was a regular member of the Britten Pears Orchestra and in 2005 toured Northern Italy as a soloist with
the European Vacation Chamber Orchestra. In 2006 Graham was invited back by the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra to
perform Henri Tomasi’s trumpet concerto. Upon graduating from The University of Manchester with first class honours, Graham
went on to complete a masters course in composition with distinction under Philip Grange. Alongside his academic work Graham began
studying trumpet privately with Rhys Owens and now leads a busy freelance career as a trumpet player and teacher. He has played with the Hallé,
the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of Opera North, is a member of Tempus Brass, and is also an active
jazz musician playing with groups on Manchester’s emerging Efpi label and leading his own quintet.
