Tullis was brought up in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, and began the trombone at
the age of 11. As a teenager he performed with Derbyshire City and County
Youth Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, and survived tours to Japan and Gozo, an
island near Malta.
In 2002, he began study for a music degree at The University of Manchester,
graduating with first class honours in 2005. During this time he studied the
trombone under Andy Berryman (Principal, Hallé Orchestra), and also won the
Peter J Leonard prize for composition. He has appeared as principal trombone
of various ensembles including the University Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonietta
(chamber orchestra), New Music Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.
Tullis completed a Masters degree in Electroacoustic Music Composition in 2006.
He currently works freelance in various musical guises. Following a near miss to
appear on Junior Masterchef, he occasionally provides home-baked culinary delights
for the other members of the quintet.
